Independent Dispatcher Job Description

 

Job Summary

The Independent Dispatcher's job is to recruit carriers, find loads for carriers, negotiate rates, schedule carriers to pick up and deliver loads to agreed delivery points. The independent dispatcher is also responsible for keeping all load records and monitoring carriers load delivery performance.

The ideal candidate shall be self-motivated and will have the ability to cope in fast-paced environments including making and responding to multiple phone calls and emails daily. The incumbent shall be proficient in computer / smartphone or tablet related logistics software. The focus is to prepare, execute, and follow up with all parties to ensure 24/7 service. The candidate must possess strong relationship, marketing and communication skills, and maintain a positive solution-based attitude at all times.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Develop a strong geographic understanding of operating markets, as well as carrier requirements 

  • Make a minimum of 150 calls per day to recruit carriers and sign carriers up to the dispatcher’s services 

  • Collect necessary information from your carrier to find applicable loads for them 

  • Constantly verify the status of the capacity in your carrier fleets to understand your coverage options prior to orders coming into the system, not reacting to orders as they are placed. 

  • Complete carrier details in load boards / broker’s systems 

  • Negotiate favorable rates and routes for carrier and complete pre-check calls two hours prior to stated report time to confirm understanding and availability 

  • Track carriers proactively through the day using dispatch tools, and maintaining phone contact at specified intervals to ensure on time pickup and delivery 

  • Track arrival and departure times, bill of lading and freight counts and proof of delivery information in orders in real-time as they are completed 

  • Complete accounting records to manage payments  Adhere to all company policies and procedures

 

Requirements 

  • Strong desire to work independently and proactively to recruit carriers and deliver loads 

  • Ability to multi-task through phone communications and real-time software-based dispatch systems  Strong computer skills and the ability to become expert in the company’s dispatch platform 

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with carriers 

  • Professional and able to adapt to changing customer needs and carrier availability
